FAMOUS LOCATIONS

SANUR

Situated on the eastern side of Denpasar, Sanur has been famous since the Badung War
in the early 1900’s when the King and his entourage took part in the Puputan, or Fight to the Death.
The introduction of tourism to the area began with the arrival of the Belgian artist A.J. Le Mayeur
and his wife Ni Polok, who made their home there in 1937.

The white sandy beaches that curve gently and the peaceful water that stretches
endlessly are natural attractions. The shore is lined with International Standard hotels
such as the Grand Bali Beach, Hotel Hyatt, Sanur Beach Hotel, Hotel Sindu Beach and many others,
which make Sanur a comfortable and appealing place to stay. For those who enjoy shopping,
Sanur presents a large variety of stores and stalls which offer everything from clothing and handwoven
ikat fabrics to all sorts of souvenirs including carvings and kites.

KUTA

To the north of the Bukit Peninsula is the popular beach resort of Kuta. It owes its claim to fame
owes to two factors: its beach (originally Bali's best) and the sunset. The beach front is now host
to many hotels, except for Legian and Seminyak, where much of the social scene is now centered.
The main shops are located along Legian street.

Beach bungalows first opened in Kuta in the 1930s. But mass tourism did not start here until the late 60s,
when it became know as a hippie haven. Kuta soon boomed. The bamboo beach bungalows
were turned into losmen and then into hotels. T-shirts sold on the beach were replaced
by a thriving garment and handicraft industry. The hippies either left or struck it rich,

and Kuta has become one of the most dynamic place in Indonesia. It is a place to encounter new ideas
and lifestyles and a place to experience all manner of pleasures.

NUSA DUA & BENOA

Nusa Dua and the nearby Tanjung Benoa area are in a world of their own, for it is here that the idea
of tourism insulated from the Balinese environment has been implemented. Some of the most famous
hotels in Asia are to be found here, among them the Hilton, the Hyatt, and Club Med.
their neoBalinese architecture (giant solid gates, huge statues and halls) compliment the beautiful natural
surroundings of white sandy beaches, pristine water and the ubiquitous palm trees,
to provide all the ingredients of a tropical paradise.

Nusa Dua differs from the rest of the Bukit Peninsula. In place of cliffs, sandy soil descends
towards a long white beach stretching from Nusa Dua proper all the way to Tanjung Benoa harbour,
five kilometres to the north. The beach at Nusa Dua is sheltered by a coral reef, creating
an ideal family beach, while Tanjung Benoa specializes in water sports

UBUD

Far from the madding crowds, Ubud has long been a quiet haven for the arts.
Set amidst emerald green rice paddies and steep ravines in the stunning central Balinese foot hills,
some 25 km north of Denpasar, the village was originally an important source of medicinal herbs and plants.
"Ubud" in fact derives from the Balinese word for medicine. It was here that foreign artists
such as Walter Spies settled during the 1920s and '30s, transforming the village into
a flourishing center for the arts..
